Capital Campaign Feasibility Study

We are starting the feasibility study for our upcoming capital campaign. Questionnaires have been mailed to everyone, except the couple of dozen people who are being personally interviewed, either face-to-face or (if out of town) by telephone. We need your input! The questionnaire is not just about raising money; it is also about the health, future, and priorities of our church. We need everyone's candid and honest answers.

When you get your questionnaire, please read the enclosed materials (including the vision statement), answer the questionnaire, and return it to Cargill Associates in the prepaid envelope. Cargill will then analyze the results and report to us in mid-February.

Thank you for your help!

Samaritan Center News

The Samaritan Center - the faith-based pastoral counseling center started in our church and now located in the house behind the church - has just finished a very successful year under the leadership of Board President Paul Romanetz. The Center set records for fund development, and weathered the departure of its two most recently-hired therapists.

The Center is pleased to welcome to its professional staff Ruth L. Guengerich, an experienced and fully licensed Mental Health Therapist. Dr. Greg Hinkle continues as the Center's director, and Dr. George Frey as its senior therapist.

Steve's Scratchings

It's a busy time of year in the church: annual reports, year-end financial statements, capital campaign, staff reviews, planning for a very early Lent and Easter. Let me step back a bit for some perspective.

Part of Kathleen's and my curriculum for new member classes is a
thumbnail sketch of the history of Christianity. I do that part. A true historian would quail my oversimplification, yet even at the "thumbnail" level, church history gets pretty complex. As I talk about the four branches of the Reformation (Lutheran, Reformed/Presbyterian, Anabaptist, and Anglican), and the various denominational offshoots from those four streams, eyes start to glaze over. When I get to the contentious history of Presbyterians in America, eyelids start to droop. Yet I persist, because I believe history and traditions are important. Not that we are slavishly bound by them, but because they have much to tell us, much wisdom to impart.

While talking about these things in a recent new members class, I was reminded that all of this history  -  all of the churches, all of the theological formulations and disputes, all of the denominations, all of the church governments and structures, all of the cherished traditions of worship and church life  -  have arisen from people's experiences of God. Throughout the centuries, God's love and power and grace have entered and transformed individual lives. In response to their experiences of God, men and women throughout the centuries have invested their best creative, intellectual, and organizational talents in building and supporting Christ's mission through the church.

On the one hand, such efforts have always fallen short. Like Peter at the Transfiguration (Matthew 17), we want to "build booths" to preserve and share our most powerful experiences of God. But the buildings and denominations and theological systems are seldom fully equal to this task: the transforming power of the experience can't be contained in bricks or books or denominational bodies.

But this is not to say that books and buildings and church bodies aren't important. They are vitally important in the preservation and passing on of the faith. After all, the Holy Spirit gave us the church as the Body of Christ. If the Body of Christ is to be more than a concept, then it must be "embodied" in a real gathering of people, and those people must have a place in which to meet and experience Christ's presence. The books and buildings and church bodies we have inherited from our ancestors continue to nurture the faith of members, and help bring others to faith.

Our congregation is blessed to be in a beautiful church building with a strong feeling of "the holy." Unlike many newer church buildings, which deliberately emulate shopping malls in an effort to make non-churched folks feel comfortable, our building is unmistakably a church. The moment you walk into our Sanctuary or Chapel, you feel you are in a hallowed place, a place set apart, a place where you might well encounter God. And the God whom you might meet is not just your buddy; it is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of majesty and power. As younger generations come to faith, more and more are seeking the fullness and transcendence of God represented in our building.

As we think about investing to preserve our building, and about the possibility of expanding it to include a new worship space for the Bridge, I invite you to reflect on all they ways that this building has nurtured your faith, and its potential to nurture the faith of generations to come.

Steve

Ash Wednesday Service
We begin our Lenten journey with our Ash Wednesday service, a time of quiet and prayer when we are invited to receive the traditional "imposition of ashes." Come and join us in the Chapel on Wednesday, February 6, at 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday Nights
Soup & Taizé Worship

Join us Wednesday evenings in Lent for a simple meal and quiet, Taizé-style worship. (Taizé is an ecumenical community in France which has pioneered a style of worship featuring times of silent reflection, simple singing, and a focus on prayer.)

From February 13 (the week after Ash Wednesday) through March 12 (the week before Palm Sunday), we will share bread and soup in Room 100 at 6:00 p.m., and then move to the Chapel for a gentle worship service of prayer, singing, and reflection. Come and reflect, come and pray, come and find the "quiet center" where you may reconnect with God.

Lenten Sermon Series

The Lord's Prayer…In our Chapel and Sanctuary services, and in our 9:45 adult class, we will be exploring the Lord's Prayer. Why was this particular prayer used by Jesus to teach His disciples how to pray? What is the inner power of its simple, well-known lines?

The Beatitudes…In the Bridge, we will be exploring the Beatitudes. How do these "blessings" bless us? How do they challenge us?

Chaplain Barry Black - March 16

On Palm Sunday, March 16, the Rev. Dr. Barry Black, former chaplain of the U.S. Senate, will preach at our Sanctuary service and give an afternoon talk. Dr. Black is the first African-American to be Senate Chaplain. His presence is sponsored by the Ralph & Barbara Miller Endowment

Growing in Christ:
Children and Youth

The beginning of a new year is always refreshing. We look to change things about ourselves, and the way we do things for the better. We are not planning on changing anything with our Children's Programs, except to have any children in kindergarten through 6th grade come and participate in Sunday School. We meet at 10:45 a.m. on the second floor in Fountain View Library. We have kind of been following a Workshop Rotation upstairs. We work on one Bible story for 3-4 weeks and learn it in different ways. There is art, computer, drama, games, and cooking. The children like to go to all of the different
rooms and do the different activities.

Since Jonah has been the topic in the Bridge and a Bible study for PW, the children have been learning about the story of Jonah in Sunday School. They will do art projects, computer games, and science projects, and will finish that up at the end of January. During Lent (February 10 through March 9) we will be doing a unit on The Lord's Prayer. We will break down The Lord's Prayer and work on a different segment each week with a different type of learning activity.

I am still looking for teachers, so if this is something that interests you, please let me know Kristy at presby.net or 523-0866. I will have the lessons done for you and get you all of the supplies you need.

I would like to give a BIG thank you to all of the teachers that have taught this year. I hope it has been as rewarding for you as it was for the children. If teaching a Sunday School class is not for you, then there are always other opportunities to help out with the children at the Easter Egg Hunt. We will need helpers and donations of candy and filling eggs. I don't have an exact date yet, but will keep everyone updated, but you can keep it in mind. If anyone is interested, please let me know.

In Christ, Kristy Nix, Children's Ministries Coordinator

Nursery Care Positions Available
After several years of faithful service in our nursery, Paula Wood and Jenny Wall are stepping out of that role. We are welcoming a new nursery worker, Emily Miller, and we have two part-time positions available. We seek a four-person team, to allow scheduling flexibility for individual staff-members. If you
know anyone who is interested, please contact Mary Freed in the nursery or at (574) 264-3109.

Infant/Child CPR Class
...
When an emergency strikes, will you be ready? We are considering hosting an American Red Cross training class, which will cover Infant/Child CPR and Basic First Aid. This class is ideal for new parents, babysitters, child caregivers who need to renew certification, and anyone who wants to be prepared! We've arranged the class so our nursery care workers can be well-trained, and are opening it to the
congregation and community. Please spread the word! If we have enough interested we will schedule the class for an upcoming Saturday. The cost for the entire day, with lunch, is $50.

Sharing God's Love:

Serving the Church

Can our church be more be more environmentally and socially responsible? Can we live in greater harmony with our environment? Can we reduce the ways we waste God-given resources? Can we adopt policies that bless workers and other peoples in developing countries?

We are forming a "Green Team" of adults and youth who are interested in finding ways to be more environmentally and socially responsible. Would you like to be involved? If so, please sign up in the Gathering Place or speak to Pastors Steve or Kathleen.

Annual Reports Due

Committee moderators, ministry team leaders, and staff, please have your annual reports turned in to the office by February 3.

God Loves You - and Needs You
During February, planning will begin for the next rotation of both WELCOME CENTER HOSTS & for SANCTUARY SERVICE USHERS. NOW is the time & opportunity to get involved if you haven't before!

We can use your smiling face at the WELCOME TABLE and/or for SANCTUARY USHERING (on different Sundays)! The new rotation begins on March 2. Indicate your willingness by: placing a note in the offering plate, calling or visiting the office, or call or email me: 522-6889 or mrlnifly@aol.com. God will bless you for your joyful participation!
Marilyn Horvath

Flower sign-up
The 2008 Flower Calendar is in place. If you would like to secure a date for flowers, in celebration of or in memory of a loved one, you may sign up on the poster located on the bulletin board outside the Sanctuary.

ADOPT-A-SPOT
The Presby Bat seems to have messed with the computer during the printing of the previous issue of "The Press." I was given the credit I didn't deserve! I am NOT the "Grounds Chairperson." I just don't like to see the weeds take over our landscaping.

Adopt-A-Spot came into being in 1996. One's participation in the program makes one automatically a full member of the PTW (Pull The Weeds) Club. The PTW guarantees NO dues; NO meetings - just Pull The Weeds.
The Board of Trustees is responsible for the care and maintenance of our building and grounds. Trustee, Walt Wagner, is the current Grounds Chairperson. I feel it safe to say He wants, welcomes, and appreciates your commitment to Adopt-A-Spot as much as I do – I'm just a lot louder about it.

Sharing Christ's Love:

Stewardship

2007 Finances: Thanks to your generous giving, and the careful stewardship of the staff and ministry team members, we finished 2007 in the black. Thank you!

2008 Pledge Campaign: Our fall Consecration Sunday pledge campaign was successful.
> As of January 18 the pledge campaign figures are:

18 New Pledges
82 Grew Pledges
17 Decreased Pledges
60 Remained Same Pledges; 1 Lawn Care Pledge; 1 Music
177 Pledges = $445,821.08, compared to 2007's total of $457,364.

Thank you to all who pledged, and especially to those who "grew one step" in their giving!

The Presbyterian Foundation
The First Presbyterian Church Foundation exists to invest and manage endowment gifts for our church. It is not a separate legal entity, but is a committee of the church which meets quarterly to review investments (most of which are in Vanguard mutual funds) and grant requests. The Foundation has a number of specific funds, including: Christian Education, Building, Scholarship, Music, Memorial Garden, Presbyterian Women, the Sollitt-Scholtes Fund for Building and Grounds, the Kurtz Fund for Plants & Plantings, Harman Fund for Personnel, and the Ralph & Barbara Miller Endowment for Enrichment. Have you considered naming the church in your will through the Foundation?

Sharing Christ's Love:Mission

Blanket Offering  -  January 27

Blanket"Love your neighbor as yourself." One way Presbyterian Women try to walk the path of Jesus is by promoting and supporting mission opportunities. On January 27, the congregation will be asked to support the Tools of Hope/Blanket Offering of Church World Service. Five dollars will purchase a blanket for someone who is cold; $15 provides a hoe, shovel, and rake to a family, enabling them to grow food; $30 provides twenty five-gallon jugs of water, bringing clean, safe water to those in need; $72 provides an emergency food pack. We have received so much – let's share with our neighbors! We can make a difference, and we will – January 27 !

Souper Bowl of Caring

Our youth will collect $1 donations after each service on February 3. There will be two soup pots - one for each team. Place your $1 vote in either soup pot to support whichever team you think will win the Superbowl! Money received will be donated to Church Community Services. Together, we can make a difference. Everyone WINS in the "Souper Bowl!" Thank you for caring! Presbyterian Youth Fellowship

Upcoming Mission Activities

Hosting Hopkins 4-K Cancer Cyclists
On Tuesday night, June 3, we will again be hosting 25 cross-country bicyclists from Johns Hopkins University who are riding to raise money for fighting cancer and helping cancer victims. A portion of last year's very successful ride went to our local United Cancer Services of Elkhart County.

BuildHabitat for Humanity Apostles Build Project
Our church will again be participating in an Apostles Build project, in which we join other churches in building and financing a house. Braden McCormick, who did a great job coordinating our participation last year, has agreed to do so again. Watch for details as the year progresses.

SusannaSusanna's Kitchen is an ecumenical soup kitchen currently housed in First Congregational Church, at Third and Marion. Our congregation serves food the fourth Monday of each month. Volunteers need to be there from 10:45-12:30.  If you would like to help, sign up in the Gathering Place or call Walt or Beth Davis(293-7786).

Church Community Services (CCS), our ecumenical food pantry,CCS
distributes bags of food and (as funds are available) assistance with rent and utility payments to local families needing emergency help. Our church supports CCS with regular donations from our mission budget, and a number of our members make individual contributions toward rent assistance (since CCS now incorporates the work of the former Dave's Place). Several of our members volunteer at CCS, and they can always use more volunteers! We collect grocery donations each Sunday on the following schedule:
food  First Sunday – Fish (canned tuna & salmon)
Second Sunday – Spaghetti & Spam (sauce & canned meat)
Third Sunday – Oral Hygiene & Toiletries (toothpaste, personal care)
Fourth Sunday – Canned Fruit
Fifth Sunday – Cleaning Supplies for Faith Mission

CCS continues to face heavy and rising demand
for food and financial help (rent, utilities, medicine).
Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Members of our church family,
Another year is here and even thou we can't be in attendance we wish to say - Thanks for the visits from the church and giving of communion, and telephone calls, and flowers. The latest gift was the most gorgeous poinsettia from Christmas.
Again thanks,

Vivian & Sy Pell

Thank you
for the many prayers, expressions of sympathy, concerns and comfort on the illness and death of my son-in-law David Tripp. Your kindness
has been appreciated so much.

Luella Karay and family

Dear Friends,
How thoughtful, kind, and caring you were with words, notes, and prayers when I lost my dad. The love of God truly shines through in such acts!
Thank you

Marilyn Horvath

Dear Friends,
Your loving support gave us much joy at
Christmas time. We truly appreciated all the gifts.
Thank you, Harriet Sloop,
Emma, Sara, and Megan LaLone

Thank you for all the uplifting greeting cards and wonderful poinsettia! Pat Van Dyke's visit was such a blessing as was Steve Braden's visit and prayer. Celia and Marilyn Horvath's caring phone calls means to much to me.
Pam Duncan

On December 23 I received a large beautiful poinsettia plant and a "Caring Card" from the church while I was in the hospital. After having signed many of the "Caring Cards," I didn't realize how much it meant to receive one! Thank you all for your prayers and thoughts.
Doc Atkins

Do you have a prayer concern?
Do you know of someone in the hospital, recovering from illness, etc.? Let us know, so we can hold you or your friend in prayer. Contact Pat Van Dyke to be placed on the prayer chain.

The sympathy of the congregation goes to:

Congratulations go to
Allison (Wells) & Mark Gritton on the birth of their
daughter, Jacqueline Jone born December 31, 2007. Proud grandparents are Phid & Jeff Wells.

Cinda Olinger, our church secretary, will be gone for scheduled second stage surgery from February 26 - March 9. We will need office volunteers during that time. If you have not been contacted and would like to help call Pat Van Dyke at 295-1183.

A big thank you from the staff for their Christmas luncheon and gifts from the Personnel Commission.

Thank you to everyone who supported the Poinsettia donations and the Joy Offering in December. The beautiful poinsettias were enjoyed by everyone during the worship services and by our homebound members. Now, the contributions to the Joy Offering will be beneficial to those who are in need of help. Again, thank you so much to Presbyterians who care!
