Steve's Scratchings

Each year, as November gives way to December, we move from Thanksgiving to advent to Christmas. It can be a deeply spiritual journey. In Thanksgiving, we reflect and give thanks for all that God has given us over the past year. It is a time of fullness, family, memory, and joy. The season of Advent invites us to turn from the past and its fullness toward a spirituality of waiting and expectation. Whatever the past may have held, God offers a future of  new grace and new beginnings. Morning by morning fresh mercies we see. At Christmas, we have both gift and promise, as the Savior who is, and who is to come, is born.

The whole notion of journey, of movement into the unknown, is central to the advent and Christmas story. Joseph and Mary traveling the hard miles to Bethlehem. Shepherds and magi traveling to an unknown destination. God coming to earth in human flesh. None of it according to the conventional religious expectations of the day; all of it risky and uncertain. Who but Almighty God could know how it would all end?

These themes speak to me this Thanksgiving and advent, because our church is embarking on a journey into unknown territory. We are embarking on a capital campaign which is more than just an effort to raise much-needed funds. It will be a spiritual journey as well.

Our church has done capital campaigns before - the most recent one the successful "What Do These Stones Mean?" campaign in the mid-1990's. It should not be surprising that we need to another one - many churches and institutions plan to do a major campaign every decade, if not more often. Nor should it be surprising that we need to invest significant money into our building, particularly our heating and cooling system. Five years ago, when we considered whether to flee the downtown or stay here, our consultant, Jeff Patton, warned us that if we chose to stay, we would have to invest $1- 2 million to prepare this facility for the future. So why is this a spiritual journey?

As I have discussed in other columns and other forums, we live in a fast-changing community. The Elkhart of 2007 is vastly different from the Elkhart of 1959, when this building was built; the Elkhart of 2007 is significantly different even from the Elkhart of 1997, when we did our last campaign.

What is God calling our church to be an to do in the community that exists now, and the one that will exist in the future? How will our building help or hinder our response to God's call? What do we need to do to prepare for a future in which we can respond faithfully and effectively to God's call? These are spiritual questions for each of us.

We will explore these questions in our campaign, starting the afternoon of Sunday, December 9, with the very important FutureFocus Workshop. Click for more details.

Just as advent and Christmas represented an interruption of "business as usual" for Mary and Joseph - and the whole world - this campaign requires an interruption of "church as usual." It will require people to pay attention, and to participate. We need the prayers and input of all our members and friends. I hope and pray that we can count on you.

Growing in Christ:
A Walk to Bethlehem

Saturday, December 15 11:00—4:00 p.m.
Sunday, December 16 9:30—11:30 am.

Walk to Bethehem

A Walk to Bethlehem is a self-guided spiritual encounter that takes participants through a series of interactive prayer stations located in Fellowship Hall, exploring the events surrounding Jesus’ birth. Each person will move through the worship stations at their own pace. You may enter any time between 11:00 — 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, and should plan on approximately 45-60 minutes for this worship experience. The event is open to the community, so please invite your friends and neighbors. The prayer walk will also be open Sunday morning at 9:30 and will serve as the Bridge worship time.

Parents, this Encounter is a great opportunity for you to explore the events of Christ’s birth with your children. The experience would be most appropriate for elementary age and older children. However, we ask that they are accompanied by an adult throughout each station and that your family respect the quiet environment that this experience requires for others to encounter Christ at this season.

Also, Mary Freed and the Nursery Staff are planning to offer childcare through the day, with some extra craft activities for the kids. So, parents of younger children can drop them off and still enjoy the Prayer Walk (and maybe even a bit of shopping afterward). You can help!

  • Posters for the event will be available on the table by the Gathering Place, or the back counter by the Bridge. Please take one and post it at work, your grocery store, etc.
  • We will need greeters to welcome people on Saturday. Each volunteer is asked to work a 2 hour shift (11—1, 1-3, or 3—5). Volunteers are also asked to arrive 1 hour early so they can walk through the Prayer Encounter before their shift. (Volunteers for the 11:00 shift can enter at 10:00.) Sign- up sheets for volunteers will be located alongside the posters, or contact Starr Robinson.
  • Craft Supplies needed: We are looking for some used/no longer needed candelabra-shaped light bulbs. (Yes, we’re doing our part for a better earth- and recycling!) We can use chandelier bulbs or traditional old-style large Christmas bulbs (C-7 or C-9 size) and they can be clear or colors. We’d love them all as soon as possible, but not any more after December 10th! Just drop your bag of these off in the church office. Drop off one or drop off a lot! We need around 200! Thanks!! (questions about the bulbs, contact Jennifer Pitcher.)

Growing in Christ:
Children and Youth

TRUNK-OR-TREAT was a HUGE success. WOW!

I would like to thank everyone that helped out with Trunk-or-Treat. We had a beautiful day for the event. There were 163 children who registered!  Just a few more than I was planning for, so that was great. Before it started, I thought that we had more than enough candy, and we used every piece of it. So, thank you to all who brought in candy. Also, thank you to everyone that decorated their cars, they looked wonderful. All of the volunteers that helped inside stayed very busy, also, and I owe a huge thanks to all of you. Thank you so much for making it so successful.

Children's Church is going well. We have been meeting at the back of Fellowship Hall at 9:45 a.m. and going up to the library for worship enrichment, and then back downstairs shortly before the service is over. In Sunday School, we are studying Stewardship. In December the children will study Advent and in January we will do a unit on Jonah. I am still looking for teachers, so if any of these topics interest you, please let me know. Contact kristy at presby.net or 523-0866.

Advent: Keep it Simple and Sacred - Sundays at 10:45 a.m.
Every year it is a race to see who can do Christmas bigger and better. But where is the reason for this celebration? This study will look at the traditions for celebrating Advent and Christmas and their origins and offer alternatives that bring the simplicity and sacredness of the season back to the forefront of our minds. Celebrating Christ's Love:

Musical and Choirs

Away From the Manger

On Sunday morning, December 16 the Children's and Youth Choirs will present the Christmas musical, Away From The Manger, at the 10:45 a.m. worship service.

This musical is a humorous introduction to the Shepherds who didn't go to Bethlehem because it wasn't in their job description, to the three Wise Men who were busy attending a conference on "Celestial Signs," to some Stars that were too shy to shine, to the Innkeeper's Wife, stressed with holiday preparations, and to the Barn Animals who didn't think they were good enough to see the Baby Jesus. The audience is challenged to examine its reasons for celebrating everything but the true meaning of Christmas. Join us in worship - you won't want to miss it!

Instrumental Ensemble

On Sunday morning, December 9, the First Presbyterian Church Instrumental Ensemble will play in the Gathering Place at 9:30 a.m. Come and hear beautiful Christmas music as you enjoy refreshments and fellowship to celebrate the sounds of the season!

ALTERNATIVE HOLIDAY MARKET

CWS Best Gift

Looking for the perfect gift?? Why not give your loved ones a gift that 1 honors them through Church World Service? Information about how to give such a gift will be displayed at the Alternative Holiday Market table on Sunday, Dec 2 from 9:15 a.m.-12:00 noon in the Gathering Place.

A Contribution to Church World Service, made in honor of friends and family, could help provide a struggling family in Asia with a water buffalo to help make them self-reliant. How's that for a unique gift? For the price of 2 bags of Christmas candy, you can provide a pair of rabbits to a family overseas, allowing them to earn income. For the cost of a video game, your contribution could provide much needed blankets to a family of 5 displaced by a natural disaster. These gifts of necessity are unique and truly meaningful beyond that of common consumer-driven gifts.

For every gift of $10 or more, Church World Service provides the giver with a beautiful gift card that describes their life-changing work and how YOUR GIFT is helping struggling families to build a brighter future. CWS will also include a brief description of the specific item you have ordered, which you can include with the card you send to the loved one whom your gift has honored.

Your Alternative Holiday market gift this year through Church World Service is a gift that has meaning, because both the giver and recipient are true givers to those who have so much need. For more information, or to help, contact Elizabeth Hohman.

It's Coming, It's Coming!

Remember what fun we had together last December? Whether you were part of the fun or not, we're going to do it again on December 9th, following the FutureFocus gathering and we'd love to have you join us! There will be a great meal, and wonderful carol singing. Come be a part of the Presbyterian family, Sunday, December 9 from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. There is a sign-up sheet on the table in the hail by the Gathering Place.

Please bring a favorite family dish (see below) large enough to serve twelve. We'll supply the ham, rolls, and beverages. Last names beginning with:

A-I   Hot side dish              J-R Salads                S-Z Desserts

FutureFocus Workshop
Sunday, December 9

• How should we prepare for our congregation's future?
• Do we need a Capital Campaign? Why?
• What should be included in a Capital Campaign?
• How does a such campaign fit with our vision for our church?
• Should we go beyond renovation of our current building to consider an addition?
• Should we build new worship space for the Bridge?

These are key questions for our future. The capital campaign team (Doc Atkins, Pam Duncan, Steve Eldridge, Russ Gilpin, Jim Pyles, Janet Scholtes, and Troy Scott) seeks broad in put from our congregation. Come and explore these ideas with Zip Long, our capital campaign consultant, at our Future Focus Workshop on Sunday, December 9, from 2 - 5:30 p.m. This is a chance for you to have input in our church's future!

Presbyterian Women

Dear Presbyterian Women and Men:

It's that time of year when we come begging for your help! The Cookie Walk is Presbyterian Women's only fundraiser, and as you know these funds are used entirely for mission. What you may not know is that Wabash Valley Presbyterian Women are the fifth highest givers in the Presbyterian Church, USA.

We are extremely grateful for all the help and participation that you have provided to us in the past, and hope that you will have the time to help us again this year.

We are planning an all church Cookie Bake on the evening of November 27 at
6:00 p.m. in the kitchen. We always have a great time! We are in need of more empty (coffee) cans and will accept the plastic kind as well as the metal ones.

The Specialty Table will happily accept your homemade breads, candies, fancy cookies, gingerbread houses, and anything like that, that your talent can provide.

And as usual, we'll have some beautiful hand-made items to raffle.

The Drop-Off Day is Friday, December 7, beginning at 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. The Cookie Walk, December 8, will open promptly at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning, and end promptly at 12:00 noon.

Tell your neighbors and friends about it so we can sell out on Saturday. Thank you in advance for all your help!

IMPORTANT DATES

November 27 All Church Baking Night
December  7  Drop-Off Day 7:30 a.m.— 5:30 p.m.
December  8  Cookie Walk 9:00 a.m.—12:00 noon

Mitten Trees

Around the time of the Cookie Walk, you may notice several very empty trees appear around the church: in the Narthex, by the back door, and downstairs. These "Mitten Trees" need your help.

During December, dress them with mittens, scarves and hats. All the items collected will be taken to the St. Paul's Clothes Closet where they will help keep cold hands and heads warm this winter! Thank you for decorating our trees with warm gifts for others!

Our church supports CCS with regular donations from our mission budget, and a number of our members make individual contributions toward rent assistance (since CCS now incorporates the work of the former Dave's Place). Several of our members volunteer at CCS, and they can always use more volunteers! We collect grocery donations each Sunday on the following schedule:
