Steve's Scratchings

Although Christmas is perhaps the most traditional of our holidays, it represents God's doing something radically new: being incarnated in Jesus Christ, fully God and fully human, a new Being.

Our congregation is in the midst of discerning and preparing for what new thing God is calling us to do, and I want to discuss this here. Ours is an "incarnational" faith: just as God took on human flesh and dealt with the realities of human life, so we must deal with realities of buildings and finances and such. Moving from the "spiritual" to the "practical" is never easy — people have differing views on how to embody our faith — but it is necessary if we are to truly be the "Body of Christ" in our community and world.

In earlier columns, I have discussed the need for a new heating and cooling system, new windows in the south end of the sanctuary, and other needed repairs and renovations to our building. I won't repeat that discussion here, except to say that the need is real, pressing, and expensive. The question is whether we go beyond repair and renovation of our existing facility to build something new.

Why would we consider this, given the size of our building? The answer: to maximize the potential of the Bridge worship service. Alone among our worship services, the Bridge has been growing. It is bumping into the limits of the downstairs worship space. On the facing page, I have presented some of the material presented at the December 9 FutureFocus Workshop relating to a possible addition for Bridge worship space.

Earlier this year I asked Todd Miller to try designing and drawing an addition that would be large enough for the Bridge's growth, but fit in our courtyard space. At first, Todd thought it couldn't be done. But he has cleverly found a way to do it, while trying to preserve the exterior integrity of the building. We do not yet have a ballpark figure on what an addition might cost; we're trying to obtain that. If we were to pursue this option, the next step would be to hire an architect to review and refine the plan and come up with cost figures.

No decision has been made, and we want to solicit congregational input on the question: should we consider building additional worship space for the Bridge? You will be given an opportunity to give your opinion in our upcoming January Feasibility Study.

Confluence: a flowing together, especially of two or more streams;
the place where they join, or a stream formed in this way;
a coming together as of people, a crowd.

As I have prayed and thought about this campaign, the image that has come to the forefront is "confluence." Not only are we located at the confluence of two rivers, but our congregation is the confluence, the coming together, of two streams of Christian faith: the traditional and the emerging. Though we worship in different styles, we are joined by our shared faith in Jesus Christ, and by our common commitment to growing in Christ and sharing His love. Our path to a healthy, faithful, growing future is to renew our focus in spiritual growth and loving outreach. As members from all services join together in growing and sharing Christ's love, we shall truly be a confluence of the old and the new.

May God do a new thing in all our lives this Christmas.

Steve

Possible Bridge Addition

At the FutureFocus Workshop, the question was raised as to whether we need to build a new worship space to accommodate future Bridge growth. In the past three years, the Bridge has grown and attracted significant numbers of new people. It has great potential to continue growing, but the current space limits this potential. There is an "80% rule" in worship spaces: attendance won't grow past 80% capacity. The Bridge's experience has borne this out: it has had attendance over 80% for a brief period of time, but this has always receded. Its average attendance is approaching 80%.

To maximize its potential, the Bridge needs a new, larger worship space. The Chapel is too small, and the sanctuary is unsuitable for Bridge-style worship (and such could not even be attempted without major alterations in the space). Therefore, we are considering building a new worship space in the church's courtyard. This could be done either by using half of the existing north wing (i.e. using the space now used by Rooms 100 and 101), or by replacing the north wing entirely (which would enable an attractive new all-church entryway with a view of the Memorial Garden). Todd Miller has done some preliminary drawings for these options, which would more than double current Bridge worship space to allow for ~170 worshipers.

Growing in Christ:
Children and Youth

TRUNK-OR-TREAT was a HUGE success. WOW!

I would like to thank everyone that helped out with Trunk-or-Treat. We had a beautiful day for the event. There were 163 children who registered!  Just a few more than I was planning for, so that was great. Before it started, I thought that we had more than enough candy, and we used every piece of it. So, thank you to all who brought in candy. Also, thank you to everyone that decorated their cars, they looked wonderful. All of the volunteers that helped inside stayed very busy, also, and I owe a huge thanks to all of you. Thank you so much for making it so successful.

Children's Church is going well. We have been meeting at the back of Fellowship Hall at 9:45 a.m. and going up to the library for worship enrichment, and then back downstairs shortly before the service is over. In Sunday School, we are studying Stewardship. In December the children will study Advent and in January we will do a unit on Jonah. I am still looking for teachers, so if any of these topics interest you, please let me know. Contact kristy at presby.net or 523-0866.

I hope that all parents will be able to attend this important meeting.

Confirmation ClassConfirmation

Confirmation News…"Confirmation" is the process in which youth are given an opportunity to study the Christian faith and the church, and decide if they are ready to claim that faith as their own and join the church as voting members. Confirmation is open to 8th graders and older students, and includes study, service, and work with an adult mentor.

Confirmation Seekers, beginning January 13, you'll be meeting weekly during the 9:45 class time, in Room 107 with Pastor Steve. Also, keep watching for information about the Confirmation Retreat this spring at Geneva Center.

Sharing Christ's Love:

Giving & Mission

Charitable Giving of IRA Distributions

Attention Members over 70! The Pension Protection Act of 2006 allows tax-free lifetime distributions from an IRA directly to charity.  Between now and December 31, 2007, you have a unique opportunity to give to the church (or other charities) in a very tax-advantageous manner. Here's how:
You must be age 70 ½ or older as of the date of distribution.

Distributions must be made directly from a traditional or Roth IRA to a qualified charity.  It doesn't work if the check comes to you. (Note - start early; this may take some time to accomplish). If you wish your gift to be designated for a particular purpose, please let Cinda know.

Distributions will count toward your minimum required distribution.  Thus, if you must take a distribution but don't want to incur taxes, consider having the distribution go directly to the church.  Distributions will count toward your minimum required distribution.

The stewardship team
thanks all who have submitted Estimate of Giving cards for 2008. Not all the cards are in (reminder letters have been sent), but here are the results as of December 11, with several pledges not yet received:

  • 17 New Pledges
  • 82 Grew Pledges
  • 17 Decreased Pledges
  • 55 Remained Same Pledges
  • 171 Pledges = $443,691.08

The team is hopeful that as remaining pledges come in, our Continuing to Grow campaign will come to a successful conclusion. The 2008 church budget will be adopted at the January session meeting, after all the figures are available.

Donations for 2007 need to be given or postmarked by December 31 (make sure the date is 2007) to be included on your 2007 giving statement. If you are planning to give a gift to the church by donating stock, make sure you contact your broker immediately to allow the transaction to clear by year-end. Also, please let Cinda know about your gift, so she can credit your account. If you have questions, please call! Cinda in the church office.

With regard to giving for 2008:

  • Offering envelopes are available to be picked up outside the Gathering Place.
  • If you would like envelopes and did not check the box on your pledge card, please call the church office.
  • You have the option of paying your pledge monthly with either an automatic withdrawal from a checking or savings account or with a credit card (Master Card or Visa). If you are interested in these options, please call Cinda at the church office (264-3109).
  • If you want to prepay your 2008 pledge in 2007, please mark clearly in the memo line "2008 pledge," so it can be properly credited.

Is your pledge up-to-date?

The Stewardship Team asks everyone to catch up by year-end.  If you are not sure, please call Cinda at the church office.

ADOPT-A-SPOT...Adopt-A-Spot season is officially over! OVER!! That is, unless you're inclined to cut back the dead stalks and spent blossoms before they are covered with snow. Just kidding— but seriously, the commitment and efforts of few has been a ministry greatly appreciated by many.

I hope the time you spent caring for your chosen spot has been a time of quiet satisfaction in knowing you have been a part of making our grounds and building warm and welcoming in the eyes of the community surrounding us. We also thank those who quietly added their special touches about the grounds. It was a great help.

Now, don't forget where you've put your work gloves and weed digger because I'll be looking for you in the Spring.

Grounds Chairperson
