Holidays and Holy Days

The Longest Night

Evening Window
Tuesday, December 20, 7:00 p.m.
Sometimes Christmas isn’t
“the most wonderful time of the year”
Yet even in the darkness...
God’s light does shine!

Come to a special time of worship

to affirm that God’s light and presence are with those who struggle.
and, to experience the light of Christ that continues to shine, even in
the darkest times.

Christmas Eve

Gloria We offer three options for celebrating Christ’s birth:
  • 5:00 p.m. Informal Family Service with the Jr. Chorale and Storytelling
  • 7:00 p.m. The Bridge, an alternative Christmas Eve Service with multi-media and the Bridge band
  • 9:00 p.m. Candlelight Communion Service of Lessons and Carols with the Chancel Choir

Christmas Day Worship: We will have a single service at 10:00 am. on Christmas Sunday in the Chapel. The nursery will not be open.

New Year’s Day Worship: We will have the Bridge service at 9:30 and a sanctuary service at 10:30. There will be no 8:30 service.

Christmas Joy Offering
A Presbyterian tradition for almost seventy years, the Christmas Joy Offering goes to the Board of Pensions for assistance programs for retired clergy and missionaries, and to support Presbyterian racial ethnic schools and colleges. We are receiving the Joy Offering now through December 26. Please give generously.

Steve's Scratchings

Marley“Old Marley was dead.. dead as a door-nail!” Thus begins Dickens’ timeless A Christmas Carol. Of that much Ebenezer Scrooge was certain: Marley was dead, and Scrooge was alive. Yet, as the tale unfolds, we learn that neither was completely true: Marley wasn’t quite as dead as Scrooge thought, and Scrooge himself was by no means fully alive.

In Dickens’ story, Scrooge’s whole perception of reality is changed. He who was isolated from other humans establishes contact; he who despised the poor learned to see them as brothers and sisters; he who disdained charity became generous; he who was loveless began to love; he who lived without hope or joy gained both. The real world was far different, and far better, than he had perceived it to be. It had dimensions of mystery, of beauty, of love far beyond his experience. The possibilities for living joyfully were far greater than he had imagined.

WardrobeAs humans, we share a longing for wonder, for mystery, for an experience of beauty, and love beyond our everyday existence. We long for an experience of God’s kingdom. This is part of the power of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Who among us is not drawn to the light emanating from the back of the wardrobe? Who among us does not yearn for the childlike wonder of the children as they step into the snowy woods of Narnia?

As parents, grandparents, and aunts and uncles at Christmas, we see the power of wonder and expectation in children who await Santa’s arrival. But do we see it in the Christmas story – the story of God coming to earth, of God’s kingdom breaking into our mundane world, in God’s glory being ind that wonder and expectation in ourselves?

The glorious good news of Christmas is that there is a wonderful awe-inspiring reality beyond this world, beyond our five senses, yet mysteriously accessible to us through Christ. This Christmas, I invite you to open yourself anew to this new reality. I invite you to truly celebrate this “Christmas present.” As Scrooge learned, Christmastime is a joyful and brief season, to be experienced with your entire heart and soul. “Christmas present” is indeed a gift - enjoy it to the fullest, but remember that it is not all about you - it is about reaching out to help others.

And celebrate, too, that by God’s grace, “Christmas future” can be even better. The chains that old Marley drags are our chains -- chains of regret, of fear, of past sins, of broken relationships, of failed dreams – but they no longer need bind us. This is the true good news: by the grace of Christ, our lives can be different, we can enjoy life as God has given it to us, our past does not have to determine our future. Nor does the past of this world have to determine its future - for the Christ who came at Christmas is alive again and, like Aslan, is “not safe, but good.”

And so, as Tiny Tim observed, God Bless Us, Every One!

Steve

Advent Luncheon Series

Another interesting brown-bag luncheon series led by Kathleen O'Connell began on Thursday, December 1 for four weeks from 12:00 -1:00 p.m. in Room 101. This is a great opportunity to share the advent season and a meal with friends.

LionThe Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
If you missed the Sunday morning class, there’s still a chance to explore the deeper biblical themes of this amazing story. Whether you’ve seen the movie or read the book - or want to - please join us. Beginning Wednesday, January 11 at 6:30 p.m., Kathleen O'Connell will lead a class on the CS. Lewis classic, "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," which is coming out in movie form. The book can be read as an engaging fantasy story. But read on a deeper level, and it addresses many classic Christian themes, including sin, sacrifice, and redemption. Come and discover, or re-discover, this wonderful book. The class will be held in Room 104. This is a four-week series - don't miss it! Copies of the book are available in the church office for $9.00.

Also, the “Young Couples” group is hoping to get together to go see a movie in January. Watch for details in the mail with dates and times. Contact Kathleen if you want to be sure to be notified when plans are finalized!

Grief Class…We are planning to offer a class on grief during January and February. Watch for further details as plans develop.

Exploring Membership
If you are interested in exploring the possibility of membership at First Presbyterian, or just learning more about the church, a two-session class will be offered in January. Join us in Room 100 on Thursday evenings, January 12 and 19 (6:30 - 8:00). If you are interested but cannot make those nights, please call the church office or speak to one of the pastors.

Sunday Morning Classes
Tough Issues, our topical discussion class, continues to meet Sunday mornings at 9:45 in the Reception Room. Watch for upcoming programs.

PoGO will co-sponsor a Tough Issues class at 9:30 on January 22 regarding identity theft. Dreama Jensen will be the speaker.

The Purpose Driven Life...Beginning on January 8 and running through March 12 at both 9:30 and 10:45 a.m. we are offering a class on the book The Purpose Driven Life. Please pick up the book and join us. If you are interested, or would like to know more, please contact either Pam Duncan or Kathleen O’Connell.

Children’s Ministry

  Happy Kids

We have added a new Sunday School class for sixth graders and others by permission of the parents. We are calling it “Tweens.” Our first topic will be: “Alien Invasion, How do we fit in here?” Linda will be teaching the class for the time being. A substitute teacher is needed. The kids will be attending the movie “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” during Christmas Break. We will be doing a companion study of C.S. Lewis’ wonderful story the first twelve weeks of the New Year.

A few volunteers are needed to help support the nursery on December 24 in the evening and January 1 in the morning (there is no child care on Christmas Day). Please see Linda or call the office.

Calling all parents! If you have children that attend Sunday School we need you! We are in desperate need of parents to fill some Sundays that are coming up. We will provide training and support. This is a very short duration of time. We will be having a “Basic Training Event” on Wednesday, January 11 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Dinner and child care are provided! Reservations are needed. Stop by or call the office! Come and see how you can help bridge the gap for children!

There will be no Sunday School for children on December 25 or January 1. The Junior Chorale will be presenting their Christmas Program on December 18 and all children not in the Chorale will sit as a group for the performance. Be sure to come and bring a friend!

Presbyterian Youth

The Presbyterian Youth thank all who have generously donated gifts to the Giving Tree to provide presents for two deserving families.

Following the Christmas Party lunch on December 18, the Youth Fellowship will next meet for a movie time at Karen Renkiewicz’s (1930 Aspin Dr.) on December 28th from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., and will have pizza and snacks.

“Confirmation” is the process in which youth are given an
Confirmationopportunity to study the Christian faith and the church, and decide if they are ready to claim that faith as their own and join the church as voting members. Confirmation is open to 8th graders and older students, and includes study, service, and work with an adult mentor. Beginning Sunday, January 8th, confirmation students will meet with Kathleen O’Connell from 10:45 - 11:30 a.m. in Room 101. Mentors are invited to attend, as well! We are also planning to attend the Confirmation Retreat at Geneva Center the weekend of February 3-5. Mark your calendars now! For information, contact Kathleen.

Stewardship & Church Reorganization

The stewardship commission thanks all who have submitted Estimate of Giving cards for 2006. Not all the cards are in (reminder letters have been sent), but here are the results as of December 14:

28 New Pledges
75 Grew Pledges
17 Decreased Pledges
59 Remained Same Pledges
187 Pledges = $414,177.50

The commission is hopeful that as remaining pledges come in, our Continuing to Grow campaign will come to a successful conclusion. The 2006 church budget will be adopted at the January session meeting, after all the figures are available.

Is your pledge up-to-date? The commission asks everyone to catch up by year-end. If you are not sure, please call Cinda at the church office.
Donations for 2005 need to be in the church office by January 12 (make sure the date is 2005), to be included on your 2005 giving statement. If you are planning to give a gift to the church by donating stock, make sure you contact your broker immediately, to allow the transaction to clear by year-end. Also, please let Cinda know about your gift, so she can credit your account. If you have questions, please call!

With regard to giving for 2006:

  • Offering envelopes are available to be picked up outside the Gathering Place.
  • If you would like envelopes and did not check the box on your pledge card, please call the church office.
  • You have the option of paying your pledge either monthly with an automatic withdrawal from a checking or savings account or with a credit card (Master Card or Visa).

If you are interested in these options, please call Cinda at the church office (264-3109).

Proposed Church Reorganization
The summary of Jeff Patton’s report that the congregation adopted included the following language:

Organization: Streamline our church into permission-giving ministry teams, made up of people gifted and called to that area of ministry. Connect people with ministries based on spiritual gifts and passion. Have high expectations for excellence and commitment, especially among leaders. To the extent allowed by Presbyterian polity, have fewer committees and commissions.

This past summer the session formed a task force to look at church reorganization, chaired by John Holdeman. The task force recommended reorganizing the session, reducing its size from 18 members to 12 and organizing it in accord with our mission statement. It also proposed (with the deacons’ approval) reducing the size of the deacons board from 15 to 12. Both recommendations received approval in principal (pending drafting of revised bylaws) at the December session meeting.
The allocation of elders would be:

Sharing Christ's Love: Local Missions

Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom ...
for I was hungry and you gave me food….

Jesus’ call to feed the hungry and serve the poor is as direct to us as it was to His followers. Our church offers a number of possible ways to respond through hands–on service…

Susanna Susanna’s Kitchen is an ecumenical soup kitchen currently housed in First Congregational Church, at Third and Marion. Our congregation serves food the fourth Monday of each month. Volunteers need to be there from 10:45-12:30. After many years of faithfully coordinating our congregation’s participation, Susie Wu has turned coordination over to Walt & Beth Davis. If you would like to help, sign up in the Gathering Place or call Walt or Beth (293-7786).

CCS Church Community Services (CCS), our ecumenical food pantry, distributes bags of food and (as funds are available) assistance with rent and utility payments to local families needing emergency help. Our church supports CCS with regular donations from our mission budget, and a number of our members make individual contributions toward rent assistance (since CCS now incorporates the work of the former Dave’s Place). Several of our members volunteer at CCS, and they can always use more volunteers! We collect grocery donations each Sunday on the following schedule:

First Sunday – Fish (canned tuna & salmon)
food Second Sunday – Spaghetti & Spam (sauce & canned meat)
Third Sunday – Oral Hygiene & Toiletries (toothpaste, personal care items)
Fourth Sunday – Canned Fruit
Fifth Sunday – Cleaning Supplies for Faith Mission

Soup of Success, a job-training program for women which is part of CCS, has its Computer Lab located in the north lower education hallway of our church.

soup Soup Labels for Beardsley School…We are still collecting labels from Campbell’s Soup (and related brands) for Beardsley School. Please bring them in and place them in the cupboard in the hallway across from the restrooms.

Rosewood Terrace nursing facility is seeking volunteers to visit residents or assist with activities. If you are able to help please contact the Activity Department at 294-7641 Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Church Community Services sponsors one-hour tours of its facility, which are a wonderful way to become acquainted with its ministries. An upcoming date is  January 16 at 5:30 p.m. Call CCS at 295-3673 for further information.

Thank you to all who helped with the Hanging of the Greens. It was a large crew, very organized, and the decorating went very quickly. The church looks beautiful as we await the Christ child. Also, many thanks to those who brought goodies to make a nice meal together afterwards. It was very much appreciated. I hope all of you who were there will help again next year. We’ll try to talk Dennis Hoffer into making a bigger pot of Hungarian Goulash. Jan Horner & the Worship Commission
