Inviting all to know Christ...

Inside you will find pictures and brief information on our most recent group of new members. Please welcome them to our church family, and continue inviting friends and acquaintances to experience Christ’s love in our worship and groups.

To grow in Christ...

Inside you will find information on new and ongoing classes, and groups for various ages. We invite you to nurture your faith by participating in some of our spiritual growth offerings.

To share Christ's Love...

Inside you will find opportunities to share Christ’s love in concrete ways, by helping the W.O.W. Club, Soup of Success, a variety of Presbyterian charitable organizations, and our own members. We encourage you to find ways to serve the community and the world in Christ’s name.

Consultant to return…Jeff Patton, the church consultant who worked with us a year ago, is returning May 5-7. You are invited to an all-church dinner and meeting with Jeff on Friday, May 6. Watch for further details…..

The summer worship schedule will start Sunday, June 5. Because we now have three Sunday morning services, the schedule will be a bit different this year:
8:00 a.m. Chapel Service
9:15 a.m. Bridge Service
10:30 a.m. Sanctuary Service

Steve's Scratchings

Our consultant, Jeff Patton, is returning the first weekend in May for a brief visit (part of our original contract). Originally scheduled for early January, Jeff’s visit has been rescheduled once by us and once by Jeff. In anticipation, I want to reflect briefly on how we’re doing.

If you recall, Jeff did thorough review of our church through the Complete Ministry Audit, spent three days with us, and then wrote an extensive report. Some of his recommendations were very specific; others had to do more with gaining a new clarity and focus on our mission and values. After study and prayer, we adopted the essence of Jeff’s recommendations – setting forth a fairly ambitious agenda for our church. In the months since, we’ve accomplished some of what we planned, and have yet to do other things.

After much prayer and discussion, the Session adopted a new mission statement: Inviting all to know Christ, grow in Christ, and share Christ’s love. We’ve been working to have this mission statement guide and focus our activities.

Inviting All to Know Christ

We have:
• taken steps to make our building more inviting and welcoming (more visitor parking spaces, new welcome center, more space between pews in sanctuary, better interior signage, etc.);
• moved The Bridge to Sunday mornings to be more attractive to young adults;
• upgraded the stage, tech booth, and equipment downstairs for The Bridge recruited and trained people to watch out for and welcome visitors;
• strengthened our visitor tracking and follow-up process;
• begun a new “connecting team” to help assimilate new members into the life of our church.

We have yet to do several important things, including a survey of our neighborhood, serious study of our demographics, and planning new outreach-oriented ministries.

Growing in Christ

We have:
• recruited and trained a number of small group leaders, in order to multiply the number of small group opportunities;
• challenged our members and friends to grow in their stewardship through the Grow-One campaign (the response to which was wonderfully positive); and
begun serious exploration of the person and call of Jesus Christ through the study of McLaren’s A Generous Orthodoxy.

Sharing Christ’s Love

In this area we have done the fewest new things, and I believe we need to focus on our loving outreach in the months ahead.

The essence of Jeff’s challenge to us is to move from maintenance to mission. As I’ve said before, a church can’t move from maintenance to mission overnight; it is a process that takes several years to bear fruit. It is a significant change in focus — from inward to outward. Moving in this direction involves some “wilderness wandering” as we seek to discern just what our particular call to Christ’s mission looks like. Such “wilderness wandering” is frustrating. But I believe that we are on the right track, and God will guide us into a bright future
Steve

A huge thank you to the Groovin’ JAM Time kids:  Andy, and Mason Braden, Ted Romanetz, and Ashley, and Allison Valentijn, who created the ten recycled materials-inspired holes of “golf” that over one hundred friends and family enjoyed on Palm Sunday and Easter. Lots of fun! Extra thanks goes to Mindy Suhr, Kathy Wall, and the pyf’ers: Kelly Davis, Heather Freed, Lauren Pitcher, Julia Robinson, and Katie Wright, for floor taping and wonderful creative assistance. Trustee Tribune

Projects to maintain and update the church building and facilities continue every month. The projects for March-April were as follows:
  •  Three double-pane windows in the Chapel have been replaced. The old windows had lost the seal and condensation developed between the windowpanes.
  •  New financial software continues to improve the efficiency of the reporting and check-writing.
  •  The underground wiring to the back parking lot lights on the sanctuary window has been repaired, so the window is lit again at night.
  •  The new high-efficiency spotlights for the chancel in the sanctuary have all been installed.
  •  A contract has been signed to fill in the clogged drywell under the memorial garden and to dig two new drywells under the Beardsley St. parking lot. This is in accord with the requirement that surface run-off not be drained into the city’s storm sewer system. The work should be completed early in May.
  •  It was discovered this spring that the older of our two boilers is no longer working. The trustees have commissioned a thorough review of our HVAC system.
  •  The trustees are investigating the immediate and long-range facility needs of the church.
  •  No spring clean-up day is scheduled because the grounds appear to be in good shape.

Please take the time to look at the projects. If there is anything that you notice that needs attention in the Church please send a note to Cinda Olinger in the Church office and she will forward it to the Trustee Board.

As Troy Scott replaces Russ Gilpin as moderator, we thank our other outgoing trustees: Linda Fulkerson, Dick Griffin, and Betty Kegerreis.

Parents of Young Children

A new small group

Parenting is one of the most rewarding and challenging activities any of us tackle. We can all use support and encouragement—especially when we wish to raise our children as faithful followers of Christ. If you are looking for an opportunity for study and fellowship with other parents, this new group is for you.

What is a “young child”?
The group is for parents whose children are not old enough for Elementary School.

What if we’re “expecting”, do we wait until the baby is born?
Now is a great time to get involved!

Is this for couples only?
No, single parents and individual members of a couple are welcome and wanted.

When and Where?
An introductory meeting will be held on Sunday, May 1 at 6:30 at the home of Paula and Terry Wood (1535 Erwin St.).
Child care will be provided. Please RSVP to Paula (206-1657).
