Steve's Scratchings I want to share with you a praise, a picture, and a plea. My praise is for our congregation's willingness your willingness to allow our church to change and adapt to changing times. Forty-five years ago the congregation moved over the Main Street bridge to our current location. Forty-three years later it recognized the need to build new bridges to the growing number of unchurched people, and began The Bridge worship service, while maintaining the excellence of its more traditional worship. Now it has undertaken a new commitment to become more outwardly-focused and mission-oriented. I praise God and I praise you For a church with our proud traditions, these are extraordinary examples of faith. Now the picture: It is my vision; it is not officially adopted. As you read it, I challenge you to compare it with your vision. What would we look like if we become the church Christ is calling us to be? My vision is a vibrant congregation committed to invitation, discipleship, and outreach. Young and old, men, women, and children, rich and poor, all growing spiritually. They are not just members; they are not just Christians; they are lethng God's Spirit transform them into disciples who make a difference for Christ. Within the congregation we enjoy true Christian community deep relationships of caring and love, nurtured in small groups and multiple friendships. But the comfort of community doesn't dull the desire to reach out to new people, introducing them to the love of Christ and nurturing their growth into disciples. Although our congregation is drawn from a wide region, we are committed to serving downtown Elkhart and its multi-cultural and mobile population. We are known as an active church, where people are encouraged and expected to be involved in both spiritual growth and hands-on ministry. We are an open and inclusive church, welcoming people who are not welcome elsewhere, including people of diverse races and sexual orientation. We are committed to ministries of justice and peace as well as of invitation. What is your vision for our church? Does this match your vision? And, last, my plea. In order to move toward the church Christ calls us to be, we need your personal involvement in prayer, in giving of time and energy, and in financial support. In this newsletter are a number of opportunities for specific involvement. Some of them are new; others are ongoing (e.g. teaching in our JAM Time workshop rotation). Everyone can help, everyone's help is needed. What will you do?

Opportunities to Make a Difference
The Outreach Commission Needs You!...We are looking for people to welcome our visitors, introduce them to our pastors, show them how to get around our church, and encourage them to return. Show them what a wonderful church family we really are! This is an opportunity to reach perspective new members on Sunday morning when you are at church anyway. Help us be a welcoming community of faith for Elkhart. You may also call Jane Cherepak at 264-4458. This is an essential part of our new Fall program that will begin August 22. Be part of this Welcome Ministry and watch our church grow!
Calling all Techies...Would you enjoy learning skills in audio (soundboard) and/or video projection technology? We are in great need of additional people to work the tech booth at The Bridge and/or the sound booth at the sanctuary service. If you might be interested, speak to Todd Miller, Mike Stoll, or one of the pastors.
. Backpack Supplies needed...School Supplies are still needed for the backpacks that are put together by the Presbyterian Women. Items needed are: pencils, colored pencils, large erasers, blunt scissors, crayons, pencil sharpeners, glue sticks, rulers, spiral bound notebooks, and construction paper. Please bring items to the church as soon as possible. Your donations will make a difference in the life of a child; thank you!
Sunday Morning Prayer Team...Would you be willing to pray for one of our Sunday services as it is happening? We seek to build teams to gather in our new Prayer Chapel to pray during each of our three Sunday services. Would be willing to be a part of this prayer ministry, praying for both leaders and attendees? If so, please sign up or speak to one of the pastors.
Prayer Shawl Ministry...For about four years a new ministry has been growing called the Prayer Shawl Ministry. It offers knitters and crocheters an opportunity to give to the community through this art. Anyone, man, woman, or child, who is interested please contact Jill Stoll at 848-5322.
Beardsley School...Our Neighborhood Connection School, Beardsley Elementary, needs some friendly, smiling faces to help serve hot dogs and chips at their First Night Open House. Wednesday, August 25 from 5:00-7:15 p.m., you can make a difference as they kick off the 2004-2005 School Year! Contact Deb Weaver at 262-5575 today!
Implementation of Consultant's Report August 2004 On June 20, we adopted the essence of Jeff Patton's recommendations to prepare our church for a vibrant future. Copies of what we adopted (as well as the complete report) are available outside the chapel, in the rear of the sanctuary, and in the church office. Although this action came just before our summer break, when many of our members and staff have taken much-needed vacation, we have been moving forward on implementation. This will give a brief synopsis of activity to date. Watch for further details in future newsletters. Focus & Mission: Our session is prayerfully discerning a new statement of our mission. As we prepare for fall activities, we seek to keep our focus on reaching out to share the love of Christ with those outside our walls. Change: Although we are maintaining some vital elements of our ministry, including our location and our existing worship services, we should not minimize the degree of change we need, or the speed with which we need it. Long-established churches often struggle in a fast-changing world, because they are used to changing very slowly, if at all. The pace at which we are moving may seem uncomfortably quick, but it is necessary to fulfill our mission. Moving at this pace will involve increased trust and "permission-giving" for both lay leadership and staff. Prayer: This whole process will succeed only if it is bathed in prayer and led by the Holy Spirit. We have a new prayer chapel almost ready in Room 107 (next to the sexton's office), through the leadership and generosity of the Wednesday's Table small group. We plan to begin regular prayer on Sunday mornings and at other times. We need everyone praying for this effort. Basic Processes of Thriving Churches:
Inviting People to Experience God's Love: We have begun a number of new initiatives, primarily in the areas of making our facilities more inviting and worship services more welcoming. Other recommended actions have not yet been started. However, the key factor continues to be having our current members actively inviting others on a regular basis. - Sanctuary Renovations: We have installed new ceiling fans to improve cooling and heating and have re-spaced the pews to make them more comfortable and inviting.
- Sunday Morning Contemporary Worship: Plans are proceeding to re-open The Bridge worship in the fellowship hall at 9:45 on Sunday mornings, starting August 22.
- Fellowship Hall Renovations: A number of renovations in the Fellowship Hall are planned to enhance The Bridge worship experience.
- Parking: We have resurfaced our parking lots and created more new spaces for visitors on the south (Beardsley St.) side. Members, please help our efforts by leaving these spaces open on Sunday mornings! You are free to use them at other times.
- Postcards: Our next round of postcards were mailed to 10,000 households the week of August 16. Another mailing will follow in the fall, and another before Christmas.
- First-Touch Ministries: On Hospitality Sunday, August 15, we invited our members to become active in our "first touch" ministries (greeting, welcoming, and following up with visitors).
- Welcome Centers and Interior Signage: We are planning to create two new welcome centers:
- one in the coat area just east of the central south door (where the portable desk sits on Sunday mornings) and at the bottom of the stairs outside the fellowship hall. We are working to improve our interior signage.
- Exterior Signage: We are investigating placing directional signs around town and also the possibility of a large, colorful banner on the chapel wall.
- Safe Church Policy: The session is considering a new policy to ensure the safety of children and vulnerable adults under our care.
Growing People into Disciples:- Small Groups: We seek to expand the number and variety of our small groups. We need trained and committed small group leaders. If you feel called into this area of ministry, please speak to Kathleen O'Connell.
- Christian Conversations: Our Sunday morning discussion group will continue weekly. Senior Ministry: We are forming a Senior Council to initiate and coordinate ministries for our senior members.
- Youth Ministry: We have found a new leader for our youth ministry, whom we will be introducing to the congregation in August. She will start in September.
- Children's Ministry: Our Workshop Rotation and Sonshine Kids programs will continue, running the same time as The Bridge.
- Stewardship: Our fall stewardship program, "Grow One," will focus on the role of stewardship in spiritual growth.
- Connecting & Discovery Ministries: We are planning how best to implement a "discovery process" (helping people discover their spiritual gifts and passions) and a "connecting ministry" (helping people connect their gifts and passions with mission and ministry).
Sending Discipies to Make a Difference:- Beardsley School: We seek to increase participation in our support of Beardsley School through mentoring, tutoring, and other activities.
- Ministry of Invitation: If Christ's love and this church have made a difference in your life, you can make a difference in someone else's life by inviting them to our church. We hope to help people become more comfortable with the ministry of invitation.
- Support for Current Service: Many of our members are very active in difference-making programs in our community. We want to recognize and support these.
Facilities:- Former Montessori Rooms: The Montessori School has moved out and we have repainted the rooms it was using. Room 104 will be used by the New Horizons Sunday class and AA. Room 103 will be used by Church Community Services Soup of Success computer lab.
- Long-term Needs: The trustees are studying our long-term facilities needs.
Trustee Tribune The summer 2004 was a busy time for church projects. We would like to bring everyone up-to-date.- Room air conditioners with remote controls were installed in Room 100 (Kitchen/Meeting Room) and Room 101 (Bride's Room).
- Repaired holes in parking lot.
- Sealed parking areas and painted stripes.
- 10 Visitor parking spaces were designated in the front of the church.
- Two classrooms that were used by the Montessori School were painted.
- Downstairs hallway was painted.
- Pews in the Sanctuary were adjusted to increase the legroom and comfort. The seat spacing was increased by 8 inches.
- A center main aisle from side to side in the Sanctuary was added.
- Physically challenged seating areas were added on the main aisles in the center of the Sanctuary.
- The floor in the Sanctuary was cleaned and waxed.
- All pews were anchored with new screws and plugs.
- Six new commercial ceiling fans were installed in the Sanctuary.
- Security Camera and an Electronic Door Lock were added to the entrance door near the Chapel. The door can be opened from the church office.
- Upgraded the Control Switches for Heating and Air Conditioning system.
Please take the time to look for the improvements. More importantly, tell your friends and neighbors about the improvements. Your ideas and financial support were the key to accomplishing these projects.
Special Donations for Bridge Renovations Sought: In order to prepare the fellowship hall for Sunday morning Bridge worship, we need to raise about $9,000 immediately, and about $30,000 by next summer. Projects include a new permanent tech booth, better lighting and sound, new signage, and better heat and cooling. The session has authorized a special fund appeal for this purpose. Can you help? Please designate your checks "Bridge renovation." Thank you!

Triennium Memories On Tuesday, July 20, 11 youth and 1 adult from our church left to join over 6,000 Presbyterians at Purdue University for the National Youth Triennium. We wish to thank the congregation for all our support and prayers! And, a big thanks to David Gruber for driving us (and our gear) there on Tuesday, and picking us up on Sunday.
Here are some of the youth's comments after the event:
"My favorite part of triennium was getting to know people in my own church group better."
"The global partners' were excellent speakers with amazing stories."
"My favorite part has to be all the people I met from around the U.S. and around the world."
"I found that my relationship with Christ grew greatly, and I think I know what I am supposed to do these next few months in His name."
"1 remember the inspiring preacher from Georgia. Not only did he have a strong message, but also an enthusiastic way of showing it. That was the definite highlight."
"1 definitely have a stronger urge to reach out to strangers. I definitely feel closer to Christ."
"I really liked the last night of small group when we wrote positive comments about each person and then made a "web" by sharing a memory from Triennium and tossing the string to another person. I also loved Fusion with the international visitors. I enjoyed Sabbath morning and the freedoms we had to go wherever on campus and talk to whomever.., trade pins, talk about home...Also, just getting to know people in church groups or small groups during (long) walks, hanging out, or during rec events."
"A topic in small group made me think about things I believe in, and some of it I'm still figuring out."

| Faith Mission Needs Our Help
Dear Christian Friends: Normally we are asking that you participate in our "Scrub the Mission" program at this time. Because of the demands on our Community Walk-In feeding program we are asking a special request from you. We need the following: 1. Napkins 2. Plastic Silverware (forks, spoons, knives) 3. Paper or Foam Cups & Plates
Your participation in the past of collecting cleaning supplies for us here at Faith Mission has been such a blessing. Every month that has a fifth Sunday (such as August) we call "Scrub the Mission" Sunday. This is where we ask your congregation, or a group within your church, to collect cleaning supplies. This month on the fifth Sunday we are asking that the above list is collected for us instead of the cleaning supplies. Our Walk-In Feeding program is available to anyone in the community at no cost to them, who are in need of a meal at lunch and dinner seven days a week. The walk-in program has been such a huge success and the need in our community great that we find ourselves in very short supply of the items listed above. We invite you to pass along the times to your congregation if anyone is in need or just would like to volunteer or see what we do during our Community Walk-In meals program. Lunch starts at 12:30 p.m., Dinner at 5:00 p.m. seven days a week. Once you have collected the items you can call and have us pick them up or bring them to 530 South Main Street in Elkhart. The staff and residents here at Faith Mission thank you for your prayerful support and generosity through giving opportunities such as this. If you have any questions, please feel free to give me a call at 574-970-5285. Mike Perez Development Director
Food for Church Community Services
The CCS Food Pantry is running low! Despite the health of our local economy, the demand for food is skyrocketing. In July, CCS' pantry served 269 more families than in July, 2003, an increase of 944 people. The pantry has had to ration food, cutting back to 10 items per small household (1-3) and 15 items per larger household. We seek to help by revitalizing and improving our church's food collection. Starting in September, we will collect food every Sunday. But not just any food: we will collect the types of food most des perately needed. Here is the schedule: First Sunday - Fish (canned tuna & salmon) Second Sunday - Spaghetti & Spam (spaghetti sauce, canned meat) Third Sunday - Toiletries & personal care items (toothpaste, feminine care products, etc.) Fourth Sunday - Fruit (canned) Fifth Sunday - Feast (anything goes, but lots of it!)
Watch for the new collection points in or near the chapel, fellowship hall, and sanctuary. |
