Forward in Faith Together

We are moving forward: The time has come for us to seriously pray and prepare for our church's future mission and ministry.

We are moving forward in faith : What we seek to do cannot be done without God's guidance and aid. Our goal is ambitious; our endeavor must continue to be bathed and directed by prayer. We seek not our will, but God's.

We are moving forward in faith together: Our Forward in Faith Together Capital Campaign is not just about raising money or fixing our facilities. It is about a new sense of unity and purpose as participants in all three of our services pray, work, dream, and give together.

We have many upcoming activities, in which we hope you will participate.

Vision Awareness Sundays  On April 20, we have a special Vision Awareness service in the chapel and sanctuary. Because the Bridge has special musical guests this morning, the Bridge's Vision Awareness service will be Sunday, April 27 . Both Sundays, there will be a Vision Awareness Lunch in the Fellowship Hall at 11:45. The luncheons are open to all who are interested in our campaign, but the program will be repeated in home gatherings.

Vision Awareness Home Gatherings  During the weeks of April 27-May 8, there will also be several in-home Vision Awareness Gatherings for members who are invited to consider pacesetting gifts to the campaign. Members will be invited to either an in-home gathering or the church lunches.

All-church Prayer Vigil On Saturday, April 26 , we will have a 12-hour allchurch prayer vigil, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. We invite everyone to participate for a one-hour segment on that day. There are sign-up sheets around the church; we want as many people as possible for each hour. If you have questions, call or email Pat Van Dyke at jwvpkv@verizon.net.

Prayer Cards  We are also seeking prayer requests for the prayer vigil. We want all prayer requests, not just for the campaign. Special blue prayer request forms are in the pew racks or by the Bridge offering baskets. Please use a separate form for each request. You may return these in the offering plate, in the basket outside the chapel, in the rear of the sanctuary, or by the Bridge offering baskets.

Ministry Awareness Sunday  On Sunday, May 4, we will have special worship services focusing on the ministries and mission of our church. Members of different services will mingle in a "ministry bingo" activity, as we have fun celebrating all that our church does for our members, our community, our world, and our Lord.

Commitment Sunday On Sunday, May 18 , we will have Campaign Commitment services, in which people will be invited to make their commitment to the church.

Steve's Scratchings

SteveOn my burgeoning bookshelves, I have these three books:
Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time, by Marcus Borg (1995),
The Jesus I Never Knew, by Phillip Yancey (1995), and
The Secret Message of Jesus, by Brian McLaren (2006).
I know some of you have studied Borg's book, and others may have read others of these books.

Do you notice a similarity among these titles? Is it surprising to you that here, in the 21st century, there could be any surprises at all about Jesus or His message. Haven't we been studying the Bible and hearing sermons for 2,000 years. What more could be left to discover? How could there be any secrets left, anything new to reveal, about Jesus? In fact, these books are examples of a mini-trend: writers who had grown up Christian, and yet who, as adults, began discovering new, compelling, life-changing aspects of Jesus. Although these authors don't understand Jesus exactly the same way, they all became dissatisfied with their old understandings of Jesus, and they decided to reread the gospels with fresh eyes. There are some similar themes in what they have discovered, including that we must pay more attention to Jesus' life, ministry, and teaching, and not focus exclusively on His death for our sins. And they all agree that understanding Jesus is not just an arid intellectual pursuit – how we understand Jesus has a strong influence on how we live day-to-day.

The Letter to the Hebrews says, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever" (13:8). Do these books contradict that assertion? I don't think so. Rather, they illustrate an important point: although Jesus does not change, our understandings of Jesus are always partial and subject to improvement. There is always more to learn and to experience. And, as the world around us changes, we need to see and experience Jesus in new and fresh ways.

Furthermore, Jesus must be experienced and understood anew by each generation. There is an old saying: "faith has no grandchildren." As many of us know all too well, Christian faith is not automatically passed on from generation to generation like blue eyes or height. Nor can it be taught, like math or science. Christian faith, which is at its heart an encounter with the living Christ, must be "caught."

In our Forward in Faith Together campaign, we are seeking to prepare our church to help future generations "catch" the faith which has nurtured us. Or, I should say, we are preparing a place where future generations can be "caught" by Christ.

Twenty-first century life is all too full of "virtual" experiences. As we become more and more dependent on computers and screens, we need the living, breathing, loving community, the "Body of Christ," the church, all the more. It is the only place where many of us can experience unconditional love, where we can hear the (sometimes uncomfortable) truth about both God's love and God's call, and where we can experience "incarnational" Christian faith first-hand. At its best, the church helps us both receive and give Christ's love "embodied."

The "Body of Christ" needs a sound, energy-efficient, safe, and attractive home. That's what we're seeking to provide - for future generations. Will you help with your prayers, your participation, and your generous, sacrificial gifts?

Growing in Christ:
Children's Ministry

Thank you to all of you that donated candy and eggs and egg cartons for the Easter Celebration and Egg Hunt. It was a huge success; we had a total of 30 children that enjoyed all of the fun. It couldn't have been so successful without all of the help from our volunteers, Julaine Yoder, Cheryl Ann Miller, and the nursery staff and all of those that donated things. I appreciate all of the support that I get from everyone at church.

THERE WILL BE NO CHURCH SCHOOL ON APRIL 27 SO THE CHILDREN CAN ENJOY THE YOUTH MUSICAL AT 10:45.

We are learning about the Ten Commandments in Church School at 10:45. We will continue with this theme for the next few weeks and then move on to Mother's Day, and lessons to get the kids excited and involved in Vacation Bible School (VBS).

We still have Children's Church during the Bridge service for children up to 2nd grade. They meet in the back around 9:45 and go up to the Fountain View Library for an enrichment lesson based on what is being preached on during the service.

Rainforest Adventure
Vacation Bible School 2008

VBS is June 16 through 20, from 5:30-8:00 p.m. Mark the date on your calendars and join us for a fun-filled week. All kids between 3 years and finishing 6th grade are invited to swing on in!!! We will meet in Fellowship Hall to begin our adventure and then listen to great stories about Jesus, make cool crafts, sing fun songs, play zany games, and make a jungle of friends. Look for registration forms on tables, or call the office, 264-3109, or on the website.

We are in need of volunteers to help make this year a successful VBS. First of all, we are in need of creative people to help out with decorating. We need to start planning for it right away. If you are interested please let me know. We need volunteers to help out in the different activity sites: Games, Preschool, Science, and to be Guides (taking groups of kids to each activity site). We are planning on having dinner again for the volunteers at 5:00 and will need to have volunteers to coordinate these dinners. If any of these are calling out to you, look for sign up sheets on the tables or come see me, Cheryl Ann Miller, or Nikki Gernand, or call me 523-0866, or email me at kristy@presby.net. I look forward to hearing from you and working with you all. We need the help and support of our church to make this a wonderfully successful event for the children of our church and community. Decorating days are at noon on May 4 and 18. Lunch provided.

Kristy Nix, Children's Coordinator

Sharing Christ's Love:
Presbyterian Giving

For their mission project this year, the children attending Vacation Bible School, June 16-20 (click for VBS info), will be collecting scissors to go into training packets for Malawi HIV/AIDS education leaders. You can learn more about this exciting project at http://www.pcusa.org/pcnews/2008/08036.htm.

Phyllis Wezeman, Director of Christian Nurture at 1st Presbyterian Church in South Bend will be going to Malawi in July to lead her third set of training sessions, "Creative Methods for HIV and AIDS Education," which will train leaders in the Nkhoma Synod of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP). The materials, collected from many northern Indiana churches, will supply the leaders who will, in turn, train representatives from every congregation in the synod.

We have committed to providing 900 pairs of scissors and together with the children of VBS, we hope that the congregation will also bring in "like new" or new scissors to donate. These can be children's or regular size, as long as they cut paper! Remember, these are individuals who have no kitchen drawer or old school supplies lying around unused. Donation buckets will be in the hallways for you to place your scissor donations. Monetary donations will also be accepted and less expensive bulk quantities will be purchased to fulfill our commitment. VBS thanks you for your support of our donation supporting others in mission! Any questions, please call Jennifer Pitcher at 262-4722.

Special Offering for Presbyterian Shared Mission

Reminder: We are no longer required to pay per capita to support the ministry and mission of our presbytery, synod, and General Assembly, but we are asked to contribute to a special offering for this purpose. The session has budgeted the bulk of our support, but to meet or exceed last year's per capita and other giving, we need to have at least $2,000 in special gifts. Please support the wider church by making an extra gift, payable to the church, marked "PCUSA." Thank you!

One Great Hour of Sharing

Once again the generosity of this congregation has come shining through. The total funds from the fish banks, the Lily Fund after purchasing the lilies, and other donations came to $4,515.71. What a difference those funds will make in the lives of people facing hunger, recovery from disaster, and the need to build their lives all over again! Thank you for "serving one another with the gifts you have received."

Sharing Christ's Love: Mission

Peacemaking Scholarships

Thank you to everyone who donated to the Peacemaking Scholarships last October and throughout the winter.

During the month of May we will be attending the Senior Awards Night programs at Concord, Jimtown, Elkhart Central, and Elkhart Memorial High Schools to present a $500 grant to a graduating senior at each school.

The students will be selected by their school counselors. They will have been chosen because of their ability to promote justice and reconciliation between people, to create opportunities for healing, or to exhibit fairness and the ability to work for peace and wholeness in their school. We will acknowledge appreciation to these winners at our Jazz Sunday worship service in June.

Thank you again, so very much, to everyone who has participated in this community mission opportunity.

Hosting Hopkins 4-K Cancer Cyclists
On Tuesday night, June 3, we will again be hosting 25 cross-country bicyclists from Johns Hopkins University who are riding to raise money for fighting cancer and helping cancer victims. A portion of last year's very successful ride went to our local United Cancer Services of Elkhart County.

We will need volunteers to help with Tuesday night's dinner and Wednesday morning's breakfast.
Please sign up by the Gathering Place.

Habitat for Humanity Apostles Build Project

Build

The Elkhart Apostles Build will be a bit different this year because we are trying to fit in many more builds. The first week of the build will take place from August 2-9. There will be a two week break in the schedule for professionals to do their jobs. The final week of the build will resume on Saturday, August 24 and continue through the August 30. In short, the schedule is the same as last year except for one extra week for professionals to work. The house will be located to the east of 1035 Oakland Estates and is on the south side of the street.

Watch for further details about how to sign up. Coordinating our effort is Braden McCormick (bmccormick@unitedshade.com).

As with last year's build, our church needs to raise $4,000 for our share of the build. Can you contribute? Please make checks payable to the church, marked "Habitat."

Church Community Services (CCS), our ecumenical food pantry,CCS
distributes bags of food and (as funds are available) assistance with rent and utility payments to local families needing emergency help. Our church supports CCS with regular donations from our mission budget, and a number of our members make individual contributions toward rent assistance (since CCS now incorporates the work of the former Dave's Place). Several of our members volunteer at CCS, and they can always use more volunteers! We collect grocery donations each Sunday on the following schedule:

food  First Sunday – Fish (canned tuna & salmon)
Second Sunday – Spaghetti & Spam (sauce & canned meat)
Third Sunday – Oral Hygiene & Toiletries (toothpaste, personal care)
Fourth Sunday – Canned Fruit
Fifth Sunday – Cleaning Supplies for Faith Mission

SusannaSusanna's Kitchen is an ecumenical soup kitchen currently housed in First Congregational Church, at Third and Marion. Our congregation serves food the fourth Monday of each month. Volunteers need to be there from 10:45-12:30.  If you would like to help, sign up in the Gathering Place or call Walt or Beth Davis(293-7786).

CCS continues to face heavy and rising demand
for food and financial help (rent, utilities, medicine).
Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

The Foundation has a number of specific funds, including: Christian Education, Building, Scholarship, Music, Memorial Garden, Presbyterian Women, the Sollitt-Scholtes Fund for Building and Grounds, the Kurtz Fund for Plants & Plantings, Harman Fund for Personnel, and the Ralph & Barbara Miller Endowment for Enrichment.
