Weddings at First Presbyterian Church
We believe that marriage is a gift God has given to all humankind for the well-being of the entire human family. Although marriage is a civil contract between a woman and a man, for Christians, marriage is a covenant which a man and a woman are called to live out together before God. In a service of Christian marriage a lifelong commitment is made by the couple to each other, publicly witnessed and acknowledged by the community of faith.
Some basic information about weddings at our church:
Worship: A wedding in our church is—first and foremost—a service of worship. You can expect the service to include a brief statement of purpose, readings from scripture, your exchange of vows, and prayers offered for the couple.
Scheduling: Please call our church secretary, Cinda Olinger, to see if your preferred date is available and to request a wedding information packet. Weddings are often scheduled well in advance.
Pastor: Weddings here must involve one of our pastors, although our pastor may invite another pastor to share in the service. We do not “rent the church” for use by non-members with other pastors.
Sanctuary, Chapel, and Fellowship Hall: We offer three wedding venues: our sanctuary, which seats about 300 and features a pipe organ and a long center aisle, our chapel, which seats about 90 and has piano and an electronic organ, and our fellowship hall, which seats 90 around round tables, 150 in chairs/no tables and has a stage, screens, and set up for band.
Music: Celia Weiss, our Director of Music/Organist will consult with you regarding musical selections. Please bring your suggestions, but all music choices must be suitable for a service of worship, drawing our attention to God. Our organist will play for your wedding, or provide for a reliable substitute.
Counseling: We do not marry a couple without premarital counseling. You will meet with the pastor several times before the wedding for that purpose, as well as to plan the service.
Wedding Coordinator: We require that you use one of our church’s wedding coordinators, even if you have your own. She will be available to answer questions about church policy, help with arrangements for floral delivery, etc. She will be present during the rehearsal and wedding to answer questions, coordinate the wedding party and help with any last minute concerns.
